Confidence & Imposter Syndrome 💭

The truth: Most interns feel like a fraud. Most junior employees feel like a fraud. A shocking number of senior people feel like a fraud too. You are not uniquely underqualified.

What imposter syndrome sounds like

  • “Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing.”
  • “They’re going to realise they hired the wrong person.”
  • “I got lucky in the interview.”
  • “I shouldn’t ask this — it’ll prove I don’t belong.”

If you’re thinking these things: you are normal. These thoughts don’t mean anything about your actual competence.

What actually helps

  • Keep a wins doc. Every time something goes well — a compliment, a shipped task, a bug you found — write it down. Read it when you feel like a fraud.
  • Talk to another intern or a junior colleague. They feel exactly the same. You are not alone.
  • Separate “I don’t know this yet” from “I can’t do this.” They are completely different things.
  • Notice competence in the wild. When a senior asks a “basic” question, when a staff engineer Googles something, when your manager admits they don’t know — bank it. Everyone is learning constantly.

Uncertainty ≠ incompetence

Nobody expects an intern to know everything. What good interns do:

  1. Propose a plan (even if it’s rough)
  2. Run a small test
  3. Report what happened

That’s the loop. Repeat it and you’ll build trust fast.

Speak with calibrated confidence

Instead of… Try…
“I have no idea” “My current best guess is… I’ll verify by…”
“I think maybe possibly it could be” “The evidence suggests… but I want to double-check X.”
“Sorry for the dumb question” (just ask the question — no apology)
“Is it okay if I…?” “I’m going to do X unless you see a problem — flag by 3pm”

Look after yourself

  • Sleep matters more than an extra hour of work. Especially early on when everything is new.
  • Take your lunch break. Away from your desk. Yes, really.
  • If you’re struggling (not sleeping, dreading Mondays, feeling isolated): tell someone. Your university has a placement coordinator. Your workplace has HR / EAP. Your GP is an option. This is not weakness — it’s maintenance.
  • The internship is not your whole life. Keep hobbies, friends, exercise. You’ll do better work if you’re a whole human.
