Your First Week Checklist ✅
The goal of week one is not to prove yourself. It’s to learn the landscape.
- Learn everyone’s name on your immediate team (write them down)
- Find out who to ask for what (technical questions? HR? IT? admin?)
- Get access to all the tools you need (Slack/Teams, GitHub, Jira, VPN, shared drives, etc.)
- Read the onboarding docs — even the boring ones
- Ask your manager: “What does a successful first month look like for me?”
- Ask your manager: “How do you prefer I communicate — chat, email, or booked meetings?”
- Ask about working hours, break norms, and dress code (yes, ask)
- Set up recurring 1:1s with your manager (weekly or fortnightly)
- Start a personal notes doc — you’ll forget things, and that’s fine
🎯 Winning move: By end of week 1, send your manager a short “here’s what I’ve learned so far + here’s what I’m working on next” message. It shows initiative without needing you to have delivered anything yet.
